Summary
Translation of Mu-lan shih, a Chinese folk poem that originated during the Northern and Southern Dynasties, 420-589 A.D. The ancient text is reproduced in original calligraphy by Chan Bo Wan, the artist's father. Sung and Ming Dynasty versions appear in Chinese characters on the endpapers. Verses tell the story of a legendary heroine who rides off to war in her father's stead, embarking on a journey of 10,000 miles that takes her away from home for 10 years
